Colleen Wynn published in “Race and Social Problems”
Assistant professor of sociology, Dr. Colleen Wynn, recently had a paper published in Race and Social Problems which explores the patterns of residential segregation by race/ethnicity and family structure and the presence of children.
Wynn says: “We find that Black, single-mother families are highly segregated from White families but do not find these same differences for Hispanic or Asian families. Instead, we find that for Hispanic and Asian families, married-couple families with children under 18 are more segregated from White families than married-couple families without children under 18. We hypothesize, but cannot test, that this could be because Hispanic and Asian parents want to raise their children in neighborhoods with co-ethnics to help pass cultural traditions and practices on to the next generation.”
