Greta and Jim Pennell awarded Association for Humanist Sociology Distinguished Service Award

Two UIndy Emeriti faculty members, Greta and Jim Pennell, were awarded the Association for Humanist Sociology Distinguished Service award. This national organization not only offers scholars a place to convene and share their work but also supports a peer reviewed journal. Jim and Greta have dedicated years toward promoting and growing the organization.

“The Department of Sociology is so proud that our colleagues have won this prestigious award. For a sociologist, there is no higher honor than being recognized for your service to others. Given their years of work with the Association for Humanist Sociology, this award is a well-deserved honor,” said Amanda Miller, professor and chair, Department of Sociology.

At the recent Association for Humanist Sociology meeting in Jackson, Mississippi, Dr. Greta Pennell (professor emerita, Teacher Education) and Dr. Jim Pennell (professor emeritus, Sociology) were co-recipients of the AHS Distinguished Service Award for their many years of service. Joining AHS as graduate students, they served two terms together as Co-Vice Presidents for Membership, each served as AHS President, both served on the editorial board for the AHS journal Humanity & Society, both served on the Nominations Committee recruiting candidates for offices, Greta was program chair for three annual meetings and also served as Treasurer, and Jim was interim newsletter editor twice. They also involved numerous UIndy faculty and students in presentations at annual meetings and journal publications.
